A strong believer in the importance of hard work, dedication, teamwork, effective communication and process improvements in the workplace, Mr Ong Yew Chee had served for more than 34 years in the Government. He joined the cream of the Civil Service, the Administrative and Diplomatic Service in 1986 serving for more than 13 years in the Economic Planning Unit (EPU) of the Prime Minister’s Department. Being in the EPU, he was involved in the formulation of the 6th. and 7th. Malaysia Plan covering the sectors of Information Technology, Science & Technology, Tourism and Mining. He was the desk officer involved in the formulation and development of Malaysia’s far sighted Multimedia Super Corridor project. His last post in the EPU was as the Principal Assistant Director at the Energy Section involved in the privatisation and development of the electricity sector in Malaysia. While in the EPU, he had the opportunities to undergo various training and attended many international meetings and conferences. He was awarded a scholarship by the Japanese Government to study in Japan for his Masters Degree in Economics in 1995.
His next pinnacle in the Civil Service was when he joined the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE), Ministry of International Trade and Industry in October 2000. He was given the opportunity to be posted as Malaysia’s Trade Commissioners, firstly in Shanghai from 2002-2005 and thereafter in Sydney, Australia in 2006-2010. His last post was as the Senior Director, China & East Asia Section, International Partnership & Market Access Division entrusted to promote export opportunities in key markets of China, Hong Kong, Japan and South Korea. While in Matrade, Mr Ong Yew Chee had been actively involved in the formulation of export strategies and initiatives for various products and services like business and professional services, construction services and building materials, food and beverages. Many exporters had benefited from his service as the Trade Commissioner and also the various promotional efforts initiated by him in several important markets, especially in China, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand.
Mr Ong Yew Chee’s exemplary service in both EPU & MATRADE had been duly recognized as he was awarded the Excellence Service Award by EPU in 1998 and MATRADE in 2009. He was also accorded with the Ahli Mangku Negara (AMN) and the Kesatria Mangku Negara (KMN) awards from His Majesty Yang Di Pertuan Agong in 2011 and 2019, respectively.
